naa have been appointed by Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Selby District Council to support the development of the authorities sports planning work. The two new commissions add to naa’s increasing portfolio of specialist sports planning work . . . Sport England published two new methodologies in 2013 for how National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) compliant needs assessment work should be undertaken:

These methodologies form the new ‘how to do’ needs assessments for indoor / outdoor sport and pitch sports in England and represent sports response to paras 73 and 74 of the NPPF. Whilst they are mainly aimed at local authorities and will be the basis of the work in both Stoke and Selby, they provide a guide for all organizations with plans to develop sports facilities.

Having supported Sport England in the development of the new Playing Pitch Strategy (PPS) and Assessing Needs and Opportunities Guide (ANOG) naa are now working with local authorities in the development of needs and evidence and are increasingly supporting developers, house builders and planning consultants with the interpretation and navigation through the new methodologies to help steer projects through the planning system and ensure a ‘win win’ for sport.
